Who is My Target Audience?

Deciding on who your product or service is for is a big and important step.

Ideally, it's done before the business starts, to work out whether or not there is a clearly defined need for what you have to offer,.

If it hasn't been done at the start, or you think the market has changed, you can always stop and take stock and redefine your target audience.

Let's start with how most people make this decison - they think about sex, age, race, gender, location, occupation etc.

These can be included in your overall view of your ideal customer, but usually they are so basic and broad that they don't really give you a clear picture of who you are selling to.

What you want to know is the nitty gritty of your customer avatar.

To get into their innermost thoughts and feelings that sometimes they don't even like to share with the world.

There needs to be a deep level of connection and understanding to build trust and relationships with your customers, not just transactions.

Nobody wants to be seen as just a number, we want to be heard and felt and appreciated.

When we go through our process with our clients to create their digital products, we always include a customer avatar questionnaire.

It includes details like:

Current Identity

(how they see themselves when they look in the mirror)

Ideal Identity

(how they want to see themselves in the mirror)

Areas of Focus

(what are their trying to achieve in the life right now)

Immediate Results

(if they could have anything today, what would it be)

Long Term Results

(in the long term what's going to fill their cup)

Immediate Problems to Solve

(what cause of pain is needing to be dealt with first)

Frustration Point

(long term point of pain that continuously pops it's head up to irritate them)

Personal Objection

(something that may not have basis, but is a personal reason they've decided to hold themselves back)

People are programmed to move towards pleasure and away from pain.

Effective copywriting will always make sure it takes both into account.

Which is why it becomes essential to know these things about your customers before you interact with them,

both online and in person.

You want to be able to understand your customers sometimes better than they understand themselves so that you can show them that you are the leader they need to be following to resolve this particular issue.
